Rep Tony Hwang Keynotes Fairfield Kiwanis

FAIRFIELD – State Representative Tony Hwang was the keynote speaker and addressed the Fairfield Kiwanis during their weekly lunch meeting on October 23rd, speaking on an array of state issues which affect Fairfield residents and our surrounding communities.

Rep. Hwang discussed three main issues impacting Connecticut during his hour long discussion: the STATE BUDGET in which CT continues to spend and borrow money it does not have; the concern about the state and safety of our TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE system, especially after the Metro-North electric power issues and the report on our deficient highways and bridges which are the keys to state’s commerce and economic sustainability.  Also discussed was the expansion of GAMBLING in Connecticut with the establishment of Keno and the push for video poker and internet gambling.

“I want to thank the Kiwanis Club for welcoming me with open-arms to speak and interact with so many community leaders.  Kiwanis is a tremendous community service organization which has contributed so much to our community’s well-being and focusing on supporting and empowering children,” said Hwang.

In discussing the dysfunction in legislative leadership, Rep Hwang simply stated that “Legislators in state and federal government can learn from the “esprit de corps” of Kiwanis members and I call on both parties to work together and make the tough decisions to address the challenges the state faces. Each legislator needs to be honest and sincere with the voters and tell them that government cannot give you everything you want. There needs to be long-term planning and solutions to our state budget problems not short-term fixes that kick the can further down the road. We need courageous leadership to make a lasting and positive difference for our community.”

The Kiwanis Club of Fairfield was chartered in 1961 and has been committed to the youth of Fairfield ever since. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Our service projects most often focus on the needs of children including pediatric trauma, safety, child care, early development, infant health, nutrition, and parenting skills.

The Kiwanis Club of Fairfield holds many events year round in order to raise money for local charities. Among the Kiwanis events are the Read-To-Grow Book Drive, High School Scholarships totaling $10,000 annually, the Arts and Craft Fair, the annual Citrus Sale and the always popular annual Holiday Poinsettia Sale.

According to President Renee M Ruggiero the Kiwanis Club of Fairfield is always looking to add new members to their rolls.

Ms. Ruggiero said, “Speaking from the personal experience I have gained in my 17 years in The Fairfield Kiwanis, the intrinsic rewards I have received in being associated with this worthwhile organization are innumerable. We’d love to welcome you any time! Connecticut is very lucky to enjoy the leadership of Representative Tony Hwang.  He is welcome to join us at our meetings or at any of our activities at any time. We appreciate the high regard with which he upholds our values and practices in our organization.”

“It is always a pleasure to have Rep Hwang speak to our community service club.  Tony truly rises above party politics and shares Kiwanis’ goal of making our community and a better place for all to live in,” said long-time Fairfield Kiwanis members Tove and Dirk Vanderblue.
