Senator Hwang also offers the following statement:

The CT Office of Higher Education has found that by 2025, about 70 percent of workers will need some form of education and training beyond high school. Meeting this demand will require about 300,000 additional CT residents with post-secondary or apprenticeship training.

Through my tenure as Ranking leader of Higher Education & Employment Committee with cognizance in apprenticeship training and serving on Governor Lamont’s Workforce Council on job skills development initiatives, I am actively engaged in creating opportunities for CT residents to obtain and learn skills to work in high demand and sustainable good paying jobs,” said Senator Hwang.

This Youth Apprenticeship Grant will be a tremendous help toward reaching the incredible goal of promoting a well-trained workforce.  I am proud to stand in support of this critical investment in youth apprenticeship.  This grant program is key to helping broaden understanding of career options, and giving these young adults an on-ramp to apprenticeship. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and this grant is a great start,” said Senator Hwang.”

This grant is especially important as its focus will support the enrollment of in-school or out-of-school youth apprentices (ages 16-24) into new or existing Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) like the programs at The Workplace under Joe Carbone, who is an international leader in workforce development.

This partnership will directly engage educational entities, including traditional, alternative and non-traditional schools, as well as programs that serve out-of-school youth, school boards, workforce boards, employers, workforce partners and other apprenticeship intermediaries, to develop comprehensive approaches to establishing new apprenticeship models for youth or expanding existing apprenticeship programs for youth. Specifically, the funds will support training for thousands of underrepresented youth for apprenticeships in new and non-traditional occupations or expanded apprenticeship programs.

Senator Hwang shared his appreciation to Fairfield First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick and to Cindi Bigelow for hosting this event at Bigelow Tea Headquarters, proudly based in Fairfield.
