Senator Hwang Statement on Deadly Crash Involving Wrong-Way Driver, 3 Easton Residents

Senator Tony Hwang, the Ranking Senator on the Transportation committee, issued the following statement regarding the fatal Thursday morning crash involving a wrong-way driver on the Merritt Parkway and killing four people, including 3 Easton residents whom he represents as State Senator:

“My deepest condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives that morning in yet another devastating and tragic wrong-way driving incident.

In recent years, as a leader on the Transportation Committee, we passed wrong-way driving and comprehensive “Vision Zero” transportation safety legislation. The wrong way prevention legislation provides for funding and installation of prevention upgrades in the form of increased signage, warning sounds and flashing light visuals at more than 230 highway off-ramps.

We still have much more work to do, and I have pressed for immediate installation of planned warning systems onto the Merritt Parkway. I have reached out to Connecticut DOT leaders to fully understand the cause of these incidents and to assist in prevention. I also asked for immediate action to install the latest wrong way warning systems in lower Fairfield County, one of the highest car-traveled routes in the country. These are preventable tragedies, and we must do everything in our power to put an end to distracted and impaired driving and the senseless losses of precious lives.”
