Sen. Hwang pledges to use new leadership designation to “help ensure sure that everyone’s voice is heard and respected in Hartford”
Senator Tony Hwang (R-28) has been named Deputy Republican Leader of the Connecticut State Senate in the upcoming 2023-2024 legislative sessions.
“To be named deputy leader for our Senate caucus is truly an honor and privilege in public service, and I thank Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly for his confidence and trust in me and my abilities,” Sen. Hwang said. “In this new role, I will be working side by side with Sen. Kelly to advance our pro-taxpayer, pro-ratepayer and pro-public safety message. As Deputy Republican Leader, I will be a champion for the people and businesses of Fairfield County and across Connecticut to help create a safer, more affordable, more transparent state.
“I will continue to be your voice in pushing forward policies which help grow jobs in our region while also defending against proposals which would have the opposite effect. Our caucus offers a Better Way. We have detailed policy solutions which can improve the lives for everyone in Connecticut. To anyone who feels their voices are not being heard by the majority, and to anyone who feels frustrated and disheartened by our state government, I want you to contact me. I will help ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and respected in Hartford. Our Republican caucus is energized and enthusiastic. We are listening – and working – for you.”
Sen. Hwang urged taxpayers who are interested in having their voice and ideas heard on issues before the Connecticut General Assembly to contact him at Tony.Hwang@cga.ct.gov or visit SenatorHwang.com.
Earlier this year, Sen. Hwang was recognized for his tireless advocacy on housing and other development issues affecting small towns by the Connecticut Council of Small Towns (COST). The Connecticut Psychological Association chose Sen. Hwang as its “Distinguished Legislator of the Year” award for his commitment to addressing inequities in healthcare and mental health services that impact state residents.
In 2014, Sen. Hwang became the first Asian-Pacific American State Senator in Connecticut history. In 2008, he ran for and won the State Representative seat representing the 134th district (Fairfield, Trumbull). He quickly established a track record of what he termed “fiscal responsibility, moderate and responsible social views and an unwavering passion and community” to serve the community.
In January, Senator Hwang will begin his fifth term representing Connecticut’s 28th Senatorial District, which includes the towns of Easton, Fairfield, Newtown, and Bethel. He will serve as the Ranking Member of the Transportation Committee, the Insurance and Real Estate Committee, and as a member of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee. He is the Republican leader of the Bonding Subcommittee of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, and serves as co-chair of the legislature’s bipartisan Bioscience Caucus.
