Sen. Hwang: New grant $$ available to heighten security at houses of worship and other nonprofits

FAIRFIELD – Sen. Tony Hwang, Ranking Senator on the Bonding Subcommittee of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, today alerted houses of worship and organizations at heightened risk of being the target of a violent act that new competitive state grant funding is becoming available to improve security.

“We have seen a rise of hate crimes and violent incidents in houses of worship,” Sen. Hwang said. “As a strong advocate for increasing protections, and as someone who has pushed for this emphasis on safety and security upgrades, I am raising awareness that these funds are open to all, but they are in limited supply.”

Groups can apply for the funds through the Nonprofit Organization Security Infrastructure Competitive Grant Program. Organizations can receive funding to reinforce properties, including the installation of ballistic glass, solid core doors, double door access, electronic locks, remote locks, buzzer systems, cameras, strong vestibules and other security metrics. An “eligible nonprofit organization” is any 501(c)(3) organization under the Internal Revenue Service Code “that is at heightened risk, as determined by the commissioner, of being the target of a terrorist attack, hate crime, or violent act.”

Sen. Hwang said he will be communicating with area religious organizations to make them aware of the funding source and the application process.
