Sen. Hwang to DOT: Host Public Hearings
on Fare Hikes and Service Cuts Where the Most Commuters Are and Where Public Transportation is Most Heavily Utilized

Sen. Tony Hwang, the Ranking Senator on the Transportation Committee, is urging the Connecticut Department of Transportation to schedule public hearings on fare hikes and service cuts “where the most commuters are” – in Danbury, Stamford and Bridgeport.

“Just two in-person public hearings have been scheduled for the proposed fare hikes and service cuts, and they are being held in New Haven and Hartford,” Sen. Hwang wrote to DOT Commissioner Garret Eucalitto.  “Why not have hearings where the most commuters are and where public transportation in most heavily utilized… in Danbury, Stamford, and Bridgeport?”

Sen. Hwang also questioned DOT on the rationale for the cuts in Monday through Thursday trains and which trains servicing specific stations will be affected.

“How can the public offer comments without knowing if ‘their train’ is affected?” Sen. Hwang asked.  “And the bus service cuts on 13 routes was surprising to see. What was the rationale for bus service cuts? The state is now asking commuters to pay more for less service, and my constituents deserve answers to these reasonable questions.”

Sen. Hwang continues to urge concerned commuters to email their thoughts and questions on the fare hikes and service cuts to dot.proposedtransitchanges@ct.gov and to Tony.Hwang@cga.ct.gov .
