State Senator Tony Hwang (R-28th District), the first Asian-American State Senator in the Connecticut General Assembly, today issued the following statement regarding former President Donald Trump’s recent comments about U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and former U.S. Labor and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao:
“I condemn these statements. The ‘death wish’ comment about Senator McConnell is outrageous and dangerous, especially in light of increasing violence in our society and threats against public service officials.
The demeaning comments against former Secretary of Labor and Transportation Chao, an outstanding public servant and philanthropist, were hurtful and equally dangerous. As an Asian-American who is proud and grateful to be an American in public service, I was personally offended.
Secretary Chao and I share similar stories about family, sacrifice, immigration, as well as our love of the United States and the American Dream.
My parents escaped communist China to Taiwan and took the uncertain risk to come to America. They loved America and its freedoms, and I am a product of their American dream. The derogatory comments about Chao are vile and shameful.
We must continue to call out these destructive verbal attacks when they occur, regardless of who utters them. We must renounce them in order to preserve and protect decency, respect and safety in our public discourse.”
