LATEST LEGISLATIVE POSTS

He vetoed it. So let’s override him.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has vetoed the bipartisan bill that restores funding for a program that helps more than 100,000 seniors and disabled residents pay for Medicare-related expenses and stay in their homes.

That’s the bad news.

What’s the good news?

The good news is that lawmakers have the power to override his veto.

The good news is that WE have the power do what is right for thousands of Connecticut seniors and disabled residents.

I will continue to keep you updated on this developing situation.

Hwang Denounces Trump’s Reported Statements on Immigration

Sen. Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield) released the following statement regarding comments reported to have been said by President Trump regarding immigration from certain parts of the world.

“I denounce and condemn Trump’s recent immigration comments in the strongest of terms.  For me, it’s personal. I am an immigrant. My parents escaped Communist China as teens and lived under martial law in Taiwan.  We came to America and we realized the American Dream.  Our country was and continues to be built by immigrants.  Our diversity and inclusivity makes America the greatest country in the world.  When our President says such hurtful and disrespectful things, it minimizes our standing in the world and nationally you have to wonder, ‘When is the next group going to be singled out and maligned?’”

Hwang, who has been a consistent and outspoken critic of Trump’s past documented insults of women, racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants and the disabled, said the President’s latest comments are unacceptable under any circumstances. He said those words perpetuate the potential cycle of bias and prejudice that if unchecked, could lead to violence against fellow Americans.
Hwang said the President’s comments can be used to start a public conversation on diversity, tolerance and kindness.

“It’s a teachable moment,” Hwang said. “Let’s seize this opportunity to educate and to dialogue in a respectful way.  We cannot and we will not, let ignorance win.”

Good news for seniors from the CT State Capitol!

Sen. Tony Hwang updating Seniors on MSP Eligibility in Newtown

Good news for seniors from the CT State Capitol:

Your voices were heard!

On Jan. 8, state lawmakers passed a bipartisan plan to restore funding for the Medicare Savings Program.

We are doing what is right for seniors throughout Connecticut

This bipartisan plan restores funding for Medicaid coverage to tens of thousands of low-income seniors.

It restores funding for Medicaid coverage to disabled people on Medicare.

This action will provide predictability and stability while giving peace of mind to Connecticut seniors and our most vulnerable residents.

Listen to my radio interview on WICC – AM 600

I will continue to advocate for policies and organizations in Hartford and our communities which protect seniors, the disabled, our children and our vulnerable and at-risk populations.

At the same time, I will work tirelessly with Democrats and Republicans state and federal legislators in a bipartisan manner to address the state’s budget deficit.

We will work to create a Connecticut ecosystem that is predictable, sustainable and transparent.

We must stay vigilant about our state finances and pension liabilities.

I will make the tough choices and control state government spending in a responsible way.
