Public Safety and Enhancing Our Quality of Life

By State Senator Tony Hwang
Throughout my legislative career, I have remained relentlessly committed to the safety and security of our community. As the foundation of a thriving society, public safety must be prioritized, especially as we face evolving challenges like vision zero roadway safety, gun violence, rising crime and the misuse of technology/social media. My leadership has always been grounded in independent thinking, collaboration, and a focus on real solutions that protect our community while respecting individual rights.

Vision Zero Comprehensive Roadway Safety

I demonstrated key bipartisan leadership in championing PA 23-116, the Vision Zero road safety bill, aimed at making Connecticut roads safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. By advocating for a comprehensive strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries, I played a pivotal role in shaping policy focused on raising awareness, education, and implementing global best practices to prevent dangerous driving and save lives.

Gun Violence Prevention and Safety

Preventing gun violence is one of my top priorities. I have consistently worked to balance the rights of responsible gun owners with the urgent need to protect our citizens. I’ve led efforts to strengthen penalties for threats made against schools, churches, and other public spaces – recognizing the deep trauma and fear these threats cause to communities.

By working across party lines (Public Act 25-53), I have pushed for sensible reforms that promote responsible gun ownership while ensuring public safety. Gun violence prevention should never be used as a political wedge issue – it’s too important. My approach has always been about collaboration, compromise, and finding real solutions that respect both our need for security and Second Amendment rights.

Addressing Rising Crime and Lawlessness

The alarming rise in car thefts, vandalism, street takeovers, and reckless disregard for law and order poses a serious threat to our communities (Public Act 23-112). I have worked closely with law enforcement to implement targeted strategies that combine prevention, enforcement, and community policing. Rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the public is critical, and we must prioritize transparency and accountability to ensure these crimes are addressed effectively. My work has been recognized by the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police Association.

At the same time, I advocate for second-chance reentry programs that help individuals reintegrate into society after serving their time. Many of those involved in reckless activities are young people who, with the right support, can turn their lives around and become productive members of society. Offering pathways to redemption not only reduces recidivism but also strengthens our communities.

Combating Drug Addiction and Fentanyl Dangers

Drug and substance Addiction and the fentanyl crisis has ravaged communities across the nation.. Through my work with the Connecticut Governor’s Prevention Council, I’ve helped raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and expanded access to addiction treatment and recovery programs. A comprehensive approach—combining prevention, education, and treatment—is essential in breaking the cycle of drug abuse and creating safer, healthier communities.

Tackling Technological/Social Media Risks

Technology presents new challenges for public safety, from the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to cybersecurity breaches and online scams. I’ve championed stronger regulations on data privacy (Public Act 22-15) and worked to bolster cybersecurity (Special Act 23-23) infrastructure at both the state and local levels. The rise of digital crime demands proactive action, and public education is key to helping individuals and businesses protect themselves from these threats. My leadership has focused on ensuring that technology works for us – not against us.

A Comprehensive Approach to Public Safety

My experience and achievements in public safety are rooted in collaboration and a deep commitment to addressing the root causes of crime and violence. From crime prevention and addiction recovery to tackling the risks posed by modern technology, I remain dedicated to protecting our community and ensuring a safer future for all.

Public safety is a shared responsibility, and the time for action is now. By working together—across political divides and through community engagement—we can build neighborhoods that are not only safe but thriving. I am proud of my record, and I will continue to lead with integrity, independent thinking, and a commitment to the people I serve.
