Official: Death of Meghan Raveis a ‘horrible tragedy’

FAIRFIELD — A local mother who died after being struck by a car last week was known for her charitable work and being part of the William Raveis real estate agency.
Meghan Raveis, 45, died after she was hit by a vehicle on Redding Road Friday afternoon. Her husband, Ryan Raveis, is the co-president of William Raveis Inc. The company said Monday the family is asking for privacy and declined to provide a statement.
Meghan Raveis was the managing director of the William Raveis Charitable Fund, which raises money and works with other organizations in the Northeast to provide funding and physical and emotional support to patients and their families affected by breast cancer, according to the fund’s website.
This year, Meghan Raveis was coordinating “a much larger grassroots campaign with sales associates and office managers.” She was planning local fundraisers, chili cook-offs, luncheons, bingo and comedy nights, musical performances and more charitable fund, the company’s website said.
Founded in 1974 in a room over a grocery store in Fairfield, William Raveis Real Estate now has hundreds of sales associates across dozens of offices in several states.
Fairfield First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick called the the death a “horrible tragedy.”
“My heart breaks for the Raveis family,” Kupchick said. “It’s a horrible tragedy that a young Fairfield mother and wife lost her life by being hit by a car. My sincere sympathies are with Meghan’s children and husband.”
In a statement on Monday, state Sen. Tony Hwang, R-Fairfield, said Raveis’ death is a heartbreaking and devastating.
“Such a terrible loss,” he said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Raveis family, who do such tremendous charitable work on behalf of our communities. We must continue to do all we can to prevent these tragedies on our roadways. I have often walked Redding Road, and this tragedy struck too close to home and is deeply upsetting. We must vigilantly work together as a community to slow down and respectfully share the roadways with pedestrians, bikers and other vehicles.”
Meghan Raveis died after being struck Friday on the 500 block of Redding Road.
Raveis was walking south along the northbound travel lane on Redding Road around 2:55 p.m. Friday when a southbound vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, struck a mailbox and then hit her, according to the Fairfield Police Department.
Emergency medical personnel took Raveis to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.
The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled her death an accident.
“The Fairfield Police Department extends our condolences to the Raveis family along with their friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” police added.
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to police.
The department is continuing to investigate the incident and working to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Police said no further information was available to be released Monday morning.
This is the second fatal crash on Redding Road in recent years.
Marileidy Morel Araujo, 32, of Matamoras, Pa., was visiting her fiancé’s family in Fairfield and walking her dog along Redding Road on the evening of July 4, 2020, when she was struck and killed. The driver, former Easton EMT and volunteer firefighter Declan Kot, was driving drunk at the time and fled the scene before police arrived.
Kot was sentenced to seven years in prison in November 2021.
