Senator Hwang Applauds the 35th Anniversary of the Governor’s Prevention Partnership Mission to Prevent Underage Drinking and Substance Abuse

HARTFORD – This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Governor’s Prevention Partnership (GPP), a state board that works to build statewide capacity to prevent underage drinking and substance abuse. The GPP seeks to engage youth through prevention and intervention strategies to ensure thriving families, schools, and communities. Founded in 1989 by Governor William O’Neill, the GPP was formed as a public-private partnership dedicated to leveraging business and government resources to help Connecticut youth. Today, the GPP’s team of prevention and mentoring experts work with as many young people as possible to address the combination of increased mental health presentation and acuity, as well as the rise of dangerous substances like fentanyl.

Sen. Hwang joined Governor Ned Lamont, State Department of Education Commissioner Charlene Russell Tucker, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Commissioner Nancy Navarretta , and business and community leaders to celebrate the anniversary and renew their support of the GPP’s critical mission.

“Developing alcohol and drug-abuse-free futures for our youth is of paramount importance for our communities. I wholeheartedly support the mission of the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, recognizing its vital role in addressing alcohol and drug abuse through comprehensive intervention and education initiatives. By fostering collaboration between community leaders and private resources, we can effectively combat alcohol and substance abuse and safeguard the health and future of our citizens.” Senator Tony Hwang stated.

“For thirty-five years, The Governor’s Prevention Partnership has been focused on preventing youth substance use in Connecticut. We’ve been fortunate to work with tremendous leaders like Senator Hwang who are at the forefront of advocating for policies for the betterment of Connecticut’s young people. We appreciate his ongoing support and commitment and couldn’t do this work without partners like him!” Remarked Kelly Juleson-Scopino, Co-President and Chief External Affairs Officer of The Governor’s Partnership Program.
