Senator Hwang Joins Sasquanaug Association to Celebrate Opening of New Trail at Southport Park

SOUTHPORT – Senator Hwang joined Southport’s Sasquanaug Association leadership and volunteers at Southport Park to celebrate the opening of the new Pequot Trail. This level loop walking path features educational signs and a new recreation, learning, and wildlife appreciation space. The grand opening featured a ribbon cutting, informative presentations by local historians, and crafts/story time for kids. Senator Hwang and local community and environmental advocates spoke in support of Southport’s initiative to preserve the community’s natural beauty and improve park land for residents’ enjoyment.

“I am thrilled to celebrate the opening of the interactive and educational Pequot Trail at Southport Park. This beautiful new trail enriches our community by providing additional space for outdoor recreation and fostering a deeper connection with nature. It is more than just a path; it is a gathering place for families, children, seniors, and friends to explore and learn about the incredible history of this beautifully preserved land. The Pequot Trail stands as a testament to our dedication to preserving our environment and honoring our community’s history. It will encourage walking, exercise, and a healthy, active lifestyle. I want to extend my gratitude to the Sasquanaug Association and the countless volunteers who made this park and trail possible. This addition will serve as a cherished resource for all residents, enhancing our community for years to come,” Senator Tony Hwang remarked.

“This opening is truly grand and momentous. The new Pequot Trail at the Park shores up the Sasquanaug Association’s dual mission to preserve the historic character of Southport and contribute to the community’s day-to-day enjoyment of village life,” said Sasquanaug Association’s Board of Trustees President Laura Lawlor.

“Southport Park – a 12-acre hidden ecological oasis in the heart of our historic seaside hamlet – is a wonderful landscape to ramble through amidst the idyllic shade and breeze of the thriving temperate broadleaf forest. Our efforts to restore the native plant communities of Machamux- the beautiful land, is both to support local pollinators as well as provide an enchanting and engaging educational opportunity to learn about the traditional lifeways of the indigenous peoples of this unceded territory,” said Southport Park co-chair and Sasquanaug Association board member Sefra Alexandra.

“The park is one of the last untouched pieces of Southport. When we did our research and archeological work for the battle of Munnacommuck Swamp, we were able to do some important topography and archeology studies. The rest of the battle is in everyone’s backyards,” said Fairfield Museum and History Center Executive Director Michael Jehle.
